Lubbock – Things to do with your Team

Nicknamed “Hub City,” Lubbock is the crossroads for culture and entertainment in West Texas. Today, more than 295,999 people call Lubbock home; a far cry from the 50 citizens who originally inhabited the city when it was first founded.

Although Lubbock is now a bustling center of activity in the region, it hasn’t forgotten its humble roots, as evidenced by unique attractions rooted in history that are a must-see with your team like Prairie Dog Town and the Silent Wings Museum. Lubbock also offers many opportunities for your team to have more modern fun as well, with attractions like Joyland Amusement Park and the Science Spectrum Museum and OMNI Theater.

With so many great things to do both new and old, Lubbock is more than just a regional crossroad; it’s a crossroad between Texas’ past and present.

Prairie Dog Town

Located inside Mackenzie Park, Prairie Dog Town is a unique Lubbock attraction that’s a definite must-see for all animal lovers. The first of its kind, Prairie Dog Town is a protected prairie dog colony that was originally established in the early 1930s by Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy N. Clapp with just four prairie dogs and two burrows.

Since then, Prairie Dog Town has remained one of Lubbock’s most popular and enduring tourist attractions. To keep up with demand, Prairie Dog Town underwent a major renovation project in 2004 that enhanced the attraction with updated features like a pavilion and viewing area, interpretive signage, sidewalks, a new parking area, perimeter fencing, and handicap accessibility.

A visit to Prairie Dog Park is easy to fit into even the busiest of itineraries since it’s open from dawn to dusk year round. It is important to note however that prairie dogs can be quite lazy and might not be out of their burrows until about an hour or so after sunrise. Since there’s no admission fee for Prairie Dog Park it’s just as easy on your team’s travel budget as well. 4th St and I-27, Lubbock, TX 79408

Silent Wings Museum

The Silent Wings Museum is a public institution where you and your team can discover the history of the World War II military glider program.

The museum’s origins began when former pilots of the U.S. Army Air Force’s glider program banded together to form the National World War II Glider Pilots Association Incorporated. Their mission was to provide the framework for the preservation of the U.S. glider program, which led to the opening of the first Silent Wings Museum in Terrell, Texas on November 10, 1984.

18 years later, the Silent Wings Museum moved to a more permanent home at the former site of the South Plains Army Airfield in Lubbock. There your group will be able to get an up close view of the aerial engineering marvels that are gliders, most notably their WACO CG-4A glider, which was the first glider added to the museum’s collection and remains one of the only fully restored, authentic CG-4A in the world. Another highlight of the museum is its glass hangar door that offers fantastic views of Lubbock International Airport.

Groups of 10 or more are encouraged to contact the museum at least two weeks ahead of time to reserve a guided tour. The museum is closed on Mondays. 6202 N I-27, Lubbock, TX 79403
