Imagine yourself as someone who has just disembarked from a six-hour flight. Sure, six hours up in the air isn’t exactly what you’d call “long-haul” but it definitely felt that way thanks to the crying baby a few rows back and no good in-flight movie options. Now all you want to do is go home and relax.

Not so fast! Before you can leave, you first have to pick up the piece of luggage you had to check at the gate. So you head to baggage claim and wait for your luggage to make its rounds on the carousel. The only problem? It never does.

Having an airline lose your luggage is not a pleasant experience. I should know; I’ve seen it happen firsthand to a friend I was traveling with. In the end the airline found her suitcase, delivered it to her doorstep in a matter of days, and even gave her free miles to make up for the whole ordeal. This isn’t always the case however, so don’t expect a similarly happy ending next time you’re at baggage claim watching the carousel spin around without your suitcase in sight for the umpteenth time.

Thankfully I can’t say I’ve gone through the misfortune of having an airline lose my luggage. I definitely don’t plan to either. That’s why I avoid checking bags whenever I can, though sometimes I can’t for one reason or another. On the occasions where I have had to check my bag, I’m left wondering how reliable the airline I’m flying on is when it comes to handling passengers’ luggage.

Next time that happens I won’t have to wonder and neither will you, thanks to this helpful article from The Active Times that lists the top 12 airlines most likely to lose a passenger’s luggage. At number one is Southwest Airlines with a staggering 329,599 bags lost in just 2014 alone, according to Luggage Forward. Believe it or not, that’s actually almost 100,000 fewer bags lost by Southwest than the year before. Runners-up include other popular carriers like American Airlines, Delta, and United.

In the end, you won’t book a flight with an airline just because they’re less likely to lose your bag than one of their competitors. With all of the other stresses associated with air travel you have to deal with whenever you fly however, it is nice to have some peace of mind in knowing that you’ll probably arrive at the same place and time as the bag full of your personal belongings.
