No matter the sport, we all love a good upset. When the underdog finds victory despite adversity and unfavorable odds, it never fails to bring joy to neutrals and partisans alike. Throughout the years, upsets have kept us all entertained and been the bane of bookmakers at the same time.

5. Wimbledon v Liverpool – 1988 FA Cup Final

As John Motson famously described it while commenting, this was the ‘Crazy Gang’ versus the ‘Culture Club’. Wimbledon, the rank outsiders having been playing non-league football just a decade earlier, beat Liverpool, the footballing powerhouse 1-0.

Wimbledon’s rough-and-ready approach unnerved the Liverpool players as Lawrie Sanchez put the Londoners ahead and Dave Beasant saved a John Aldridge penalty to see out the game.

4. ‘Upset’ wins at 100-1

The perfectly named horse ‘Upset’ was ranked a 100-1 outsider in the 1919 Sanford Memorial stakes up against the imperious and unbeaten Man o’ War. The favorites had a terrible start and Upset took full advantage, managing to hold on through the line to win by half a length.

The race has become one of the most famous sporting upsets as it turned out to be Man o’ War’s only loss in his entire illustrious career.

3. Japan v South Africa – 2015 Rugby World Cup

This was possibly the biggest rugby upset of all time. The Japanese victory over lowly Zimbabwe in 1991 was their only World Cup victory ever before beating the legendary Springboks 34-32 at the 2015 tournament.

The game went to the wire and Japan’s Karne Kesketh dramatically clinched the winner in time added on. 34 points was the most South Africa had ever conceded in a World Cup game.

2. Buster Douglas v Mike Tyson

Going into the fight in Tokyo 1990, Mike Tyson was considered almost unbeatable. His record of 37-0-0 spoke for itself with many of his wins coming by early and devastating knockouts. Comparatively, Buster Douglas looked weak and his odds of 42-1 to win the fight reflected as much.

However, the journeyman recovered from a knockdown in the 8th to KO Tyson with a sweet uppercut combination in the 10th.

1. Leicester City

This was quite possibly the single greatest sporting upset of all time. Leicester City’s Premier League victory is fresh in our memories and is still hard to believe. Just one season previously, the club was battling relegation having only been promoted the season before that.

The famous odds of 5000-1 offered at the start of the season showed just how little chance Leicester were considered to have, yet they started the season brightly and, well, the rest is history.

The possibility of sporting upsets is what keeps us, as fans, coming back. It gives us something to believe in when our team is performing poorly. Upsets give sport the magic touch that we all love.
