This year, do things differently when it comes time for your team fundraiser. Give back to the town and organize a community cleanup. It brings fundraising to the next level. Not only will the team be raising money, but they’ll be cleaning up garbage and helping the community. That’s what you call a win-win fundraiser.

Spread the word

The best thing the team can do leading up to the fundraiser is inform everyone. Whether that is through social media, hanging up signs around town, or word of mouth, the goal is to notify as many people as possible. Cleaning up the community is a cause everyone can get behind.

Contact home improvement stores

The goal of fundraising is to raise as much money as possible. The team is going to need supplies for the cleanup. Gather any tools and supplies that parents have before you stop by a home improvement store. Ideally, you will be able to borrow everything you need from other team parents. If that’s not the case, reach out to a home improvement store and see if they would be willing to donate tools and supplies. There’s a good chance after you explain what you’d be using the supplies for that the store would be happy to help out.

Collect donations

Once the word is out and the supplies are in hand, it’s time to start collecting donations. You have a couple of options to consider concerning how people can donate. One is creating suggested donations that you can include as part of your social media outreach or include them on signs. Another method is to allow people to donate a certain amount based on how much trash is picked up. For example, someone can pledge to donate five dollars for every 20 pieces of garbage that the team collects.

Let the cleanup commence

The day has come. The planning and preparation are finished and the cleaning is ready to begin. Be smart with the cleanup. Divide your team up into smaller groups so you can cover more ground. Each group should have a couple adults to supervise. Arm each kid with a bag, some gloves, and a trash grabber tool. This is where reaching out to a store can really help keep costs down. Your team can also look to add additional trash cans around town to combat further littering in the future.

One last tip, have each cleaning group bring a donation jar so any passersby can contribute to the effort.
