Battle of Franklin Trust and Winstead Hill

One of the bloodiest battles and the last of the Civil War, the Battle of Franklin Trust took place in November 1864 and proved to be one of the worst early defeats for the Confederate Army. Tourists can visit several historic sites that witnessed the action of warfare. Two houses, the Carter House and the Lotz House, were used as bunkers during the battle. Both suffered damage during the fighting, and both have been preserved to show off their 19th-century décor. Just outside the city, you can also visit the Carnton Plantation, which served as a key battlefield. Touring these locations truly brings the history of this horrific war to life.

Confederate Memorial Park at Winstead Hill is where General Hood’s troops formed on before the Battle of Franklin Trust. A memorial dedicated to the Army of Tennessee is located on Winstead Hill today. At Winstead Hill’s overlook you’ll find a large military map as well as memorials to the Confederate generals who died in the battle in 1864.
