Texas State Capitol

The thriving downtown area is home to the Texas State Capitol, a distinctive pink granite building that sits on 22 acres of rolling green lawns perfect for a picnic. From the stunning mosaic floors to the towering rotunda with a breathtaking ceiling and some weird, wonderful acoustics, the capitol is a lesson in art and history, and it’s just plain fun to wander through the halls and stumble upon statues, busts, and portraits of Texas elites throughout history.

Austin Zoo

The Austin Zoo is a non-profit rescue and rehabilitation zoo located in hill country on the southwest edge of the city. Over 100 species are represented, and more than 350 animals reside here, including lions, tigers, monkeys, lemurs, bears, wolves, and 880-pound tortoises.

Austin’s Park n’ Pizza

Austin’s Park n’ Pizza is so much more than a bowling alley, although you can bowl there to your heart’s content. However, they’ve also got go-karts, a roller coaster, miniature golf, batting cages, bumper cars, bumper boats, a rock-climbing wall, and laser tag.

Austin Aquarium

The Austin Aquarium is an immersive, interactive experience that all ages will enjoy. Kids can touch and feed crocodiles, handle snakes, and take advantage of great photo ops with large, exotic birds. You’ll see undulating jellyfish, frolicking seahorses, and a giant Pacific octopus feeding on crawfish.

If you arrive early, the team can follow along on the morning rounds, watching the crew check on animals, feed them, and test water levels. At various times during the day, staff talks are given about particular animals. Climb Mount Bonnell

At 775 feet, Mount Bonnell is the highest point in Austin. Climbing up the 100 stairs that get you there is a great workout and the panoramic bird’s-eye view of the city is worth the work it takes to see it.

Just a few minutes down-mountain by car is the entrance to Mayfield Park, a peaceful nature preserve and garden that’s home to dozens of peacocks who perch in the trees and freely wander the grounds. Lily ponds abound, including six large cement ponds decorated with cast-iron turtles sunning on rocks. Thinkery

Thinkery is like Disneyland for people who have a love for learning. This kid-friendly museum focuses on the topics of science, technology, engineering, and math. It features exciting hands-on activities and projects that are clever and engaging enough to spark any child’s interest.

Two popular exhibits are the Currents exhibit, which explores fluid dynamics and the relationship between water and sound, and the Light Lab exhibit, which investigates color, light, and shadows.
