Kenosha – Things to do with your Team

Kenosha is a beautiful city on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan. Located about halfway between Milwaukee and Chicago, it has a population of approximately 100,000. Kenosha is a melting pot of sorts for the northern region of the United States. From the early 20th century, immigrants from all over Europe began to settle in the area. Many of these immigrants were skilled craftsman by trade. Walking through the city, it’s evident that they left their mark. Kenosha’s construction, culture, architecture, and more was heavily influenced by these immigrants who once called Kenosha home. If your team has a tournament to play in Kenosha, here are some things you can do whenever you have some free time.

For over 90 years, Kenosha County Parks have been some of the most popular places to relax and play in southeastern Wisconsin. Established in 1927, the Kenosha County Parks system is comprised of more than 1,500 acres of managed recreational land.

There are eight distinct parks dotted across the county, along with over 10 miles of paved cycling trails. These include the elegant Kemper Center on the shores of Lake Michigan and the sprawling, sustainability-focused KD Park on the west end of the county. From picnicking to swimming; cross-country skiing to golfing; hiking to cycling; and more, there’s so much to enjoy at Kenosha County Parks. 830 248th Ave, Kansasville, WI 53139

Dinosaur Discovery Museum

Opened in 2006, the Dinosaur Discovery Museum is located in a renovated 1908 Beaux Arts historic landmark. What makes the Dinosaur Discovery Museum even more special is that it’s the only museum to exclusively demonstrate the link between modern birds and carnivorous dinosaurs.

While at the Dinosaur Discovery Museum, you and your team can see the largest collection of meat-eating dinosaurs. You’ll learn about what they looked like, what kinds of things they ate, and even how they behaved! If you have any aspiring archeologists on your team, they’ll have a great time standing in the shadow of life-size, scale replicas of Tyrannosaurus rex, Ceratosaurus, and much more. Stop by the Carthage Institute of Paleontology research lab to learn about actual fossil-hunting expeditions and pick up the perfect souvenir at the museum’s gift shop.

The Dinosaur Discovery Museum offers both adult and school group tours as well as plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning through special programs and events like Dino Digs. Dino Digs are a fun, free event designed for children ages three and up where participants don safety goggles and use paleontologist tools to experience the excitement of excavating a dinosaur fossil. 5608 10th Ave, Kenosha, WI 53140

Southport Lighthouse Museum

After years of careful remodeling and renovation, a historic light station keeper’s house originally constructed in 1867 was repurposed over a century later in May 2010 as the Southport Lighthouse Museum. This world-class maritime museum highlights various artifacts, maps, and information about Kenosha’s 19th century harbor, which makes it a great place to spend a couple hours of educational fun with your team.

The Southport Lighthouse Museum’s first floor has been painstakingly restored to how it looked all the way back in 1907, complete with an authentic paint job and a period kitchen. The exhibits on the first floor trace the history of Kenosha’s harbor, including information on its lighthouse keepers as well as its shipping and commercial fishing history. Historical harbor maps dating back to 1839 are displayed on a desk once used to make nautical charts and maps. An authentic Fresnel lens on loan from the U.S. Coast Guard, equal in size to the lens that used to sit atop the Southport Lighthouse, is also on display at the Southport Lighthouse Museum.

The second floor of the Southport Lighthouse Museum has exhibits regarding various restoration projects and local shipwrecks as well as the U.S. Coast Guard. It also features a fascinating recreation of a lighthouse keeper’s bedroom and office. While you’re at the Southport Lighthouse Museum, don’t pass up on the opportunity to climb the 72 steps that lead to the top of the lighthouse. At the top you’ll be a towering 55 feet above the lighthouse grounds. From there you and your team can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding area that you won’t soon forget. 4th Ave, Kenosha, WI 53140
