GulfQuest National Maritime Museum

Mobile Convention Center - Travel - Hotels4TeamsMobile’s geography has been vital to its prosperity over the centuries. Because it’s so close to the Gulf of Mexico, the sea has been a major component in the development of the city. This fact isn’t more evident anywhere else than the GulfQuest National Maritime Museum. This museum can be found very close to the Mobile Convention Center and is a fun, educational way to spend an afternoon.

At this museum, you and your team can learn all sorts of cool facts about the Gulf of Mexico through interactive displays and games. Peruse the touch screen map of the Gulf while you are informed of four key topics: exploration, commerce, combat, and environment. Not only does the map educate on the Gulf itself, but also the people and cities that developed alongside it. Sailing across the sea isn’t as easy as just hopping in a boat. Find out firsthand how difficult it is to travel across the ocean by playing the navigation game. You must collect pieces to solve the puzzle and make it to your destination.

Take a seat in the museum’s theater and watch the three screens project images and clips of the vibrant and beautiful animals found in the Gulf of Mexico. The pictures shown will take your breath away. You can also enjoy a presentation on maritime history in Mobile. One of GulfQuest’s most spectacular exhibits, Ocean Planet Theater, allows you to explore a holographic image of Earth. Use real satellite data and travel all around the world in this remarkable machine. Groups of 15 or more are eligible for group discounts. 155 Water St, Mobile, AL 36602

History Museum of Mobile

Accurately portrayed rooms filled with objects from Mobile’s elite that lived in the 19th century can be found in the Mary Jane Slaton Inge Gallery. You can’t help but feel like a wealthy aristocrat as you walk through the rooms.

Another exhibit traces the history of Mobile from the time of the Native Americans up through the Civil Rights movement. 300 years of artifacts are packed into this display. Zoom through time as you study the fascinating relics that are showcased. One of the museum’s key pieces came from a sailboat from 19th century, the CSS Alabama. A genuine cannon that was used in sea battles is sure to wow your team. The museum also incorporates special exhibits during the year that are worth checking out. 111 S Royal St, Mobile, AL 36602

Phoenix Fire Museum

The Phoenix Fire Museum is associated with the History Museum. However, it’s at its own standalone location. The two museums are only a seven minute walk from each other and are nearby the Mobile Convention Center. Another bonus, admission to the fire museum is free. To make the experience even more authentic, the Phoenix Fire Museum resides in an old, restored firehouse that was previously used by Fire Company No. 6. The first floor houses antique fire engines. To get an idea on how old these vehicles are, some of them have steam engines and others needed to be pulled by horses. The second floor of the museum provides a history of the volunteer fire company and has various firefighting equipment like uniforms, hoses, and more. 203 S Claiborne St, Mobile, AL 36602

The Fort of Colonial Mobile

At one time in the early 1700s, Mobile was owned by the French. The territory that Mobile resides on today was founded by Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville in 1702. To protect the growing town, the French built a fort. Through the first half of the century, it served as a stronghold and line of defense for the town citizens. Then, the British gained control of the fort from the second half of the 18th century until 1813 when it was taken over by the United States. By 1823, America deemed that the fort was not needed and began demolition. In the 1970s, Mobile constructed 1/3 of the fort on a 4/5 scale as part of a celebration of the United States bicentennial.

In present day, The Fort of Colonial Mobile is a tourist attraction that helps connect people with the past. As you walk through the fort, expect to encounter people dressed in 18th century dress. You may even hear a cannon being fired or the sounds of the fife and drum band. There are a few portions of the fort that you might surprise you. At some point, you may stumble on an arcade, escape room, and photo booth while you’re there. 150 S Royal St, Mobile, AL 36602
