Rutland rests on the site of very large marble deposits. This fact has earned the city the nickname, “Marble City.”

Because of the discovery of these deposits in the 1830s, many people traveled to and settled in the area. Once railroads were constructed in the area in 1851, Rutland really started to expand in size and population. Rutland’s marble quarries became renowned throughout the world.

The marble deposits are directly responsible to Rutland’s success as a city from its founding up to the 1980s when the quarries closed. In present day, Rutland is getting along just fine without marble mining and offers a lot of activities for your team.
