Meet the Director behind the this lasting legacy

Legacy Dance Championships pic 1David Sanders, the Director of Legacy Dance Championships, is a veteran of stage and screen with more than 35 years of teaching, choreography and adjudication experience. He is a member of AEA & SAG-AFTRA (the labor unions that protect the rights of media professionals) and the owner of 4 Long Island, NY dance schools.  During his performance years, he toured the country with the cast of A Chorus Line and West Side Story. He also appeared in numerous films, including the role of stunt man in a film that won the Best Stunts Award at the Cannes Film Festival.  However, David’s dancing days are behind him, and his current emphasis is furthering the art of dance and dance education through Legacy.

Students of David work professionally in all facets of the Industry, from Cruise Ships and MTV videos to feature films, major Ballet Companies, and Broadway. Their performances receive standing ovations, for example at Lincoln Center in “Experience Jazz at Lincoln Center” and on Broadway at the St. James Theater in “Nothing Like a Dame.” Thanks to David’s excellent teaching, his students achievements in national competitions are off the charts. Due his experience as a competitive teacher, businessman and studio owner, David knows what you and your dancers need. Give yourself and your studio the opportunity to meet this talented man and become another one of his success stories. Please see the end of the article for a full list of events arranged by month.

5 Legacy competition levels

Legacy Dance Championships offers 5 levels of competition in an effort to keep every dancer’s experience positive and fair. They are as follows; Mini Novice, Mini Competitive, Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced.  Whichever level a dancer is placed in by their studio directors, is the level he or she must stay in for the duration of the competition. In other words, a dancer cannot compete in the Intermediate level for one routine, and switch to Advanced for another.  These levels coordinate with the number of hours a dancer practices per week, although they are only suggestions. Teachers have the freedom to place dancers in any level they feel is appropriate. However, if a routine was clearly misplaced, judges have the power to move that routine up.

If you are talented in multiple styles of dance, this is your time to shine! Legacy Dance Championships offers multiple dance categories from Ballet to Specialty. The Specialty category is for routines that combine any routine listed on Legacy’s website, from Character to Tap. In the Character category, competitors perform as a character, or perform an ethnic folk dance.

To provide some fun for everyone, Legacy also has “The Legacy Zone.”  This unique category is open to parents/grandparents wishing to showcase their talents. There is no award in this category, but there is a top 10. Please be aware that while Legacy wants to see all of your skills, there are rules. Acrobatics/gymnastic moves are not permitted in the Ballet/ Pointe category. Also, Tap and Jazz routines can only have 3 acro/ gymnastic moves.
