What is West Coast Swing?
West Coast Swing is a contemporary swing dance genre developed in the 1960s on the West Coast of the United States, and derives from Lindy Hop (similar to the Charleston). It is a fun dance that centers around two partners compressing together and then extending apart. This distinctive elastic look (that results from the extension/compression technique) is danced primarily in a slotted area, or an imaginary rectangle, on the dance floor. The dance allows for both partners to improvise steps while dancing together, putting West Coast Swing on a short list of dances that value the importance of improvisation. Simply said, it’s a great one to know at any dance party, particularly at Dance Pros Extravaganza.

The couple bringing you this event is Yuna Davtyan and Bill Cameran who each have recognizable dance experience.
Yuna learned ballet as a little girl in Russia and developed her ballroom skills as a young woman in the United States. She discovered West Coast Swing only ten years ago, but loved it so much that she went through intensive learning and training with some of the best in the industry. She quickly worked her way from beginner, to advanced, to all-star level, not allowing herself any shortcuts or advantages, and has been placing as an all-star finalist ever since.
These days, Yuna is greatly sought after in the West Coast Swing competitive world as a Strictly Swing partner, a Rising Star, and a Classic competitor. More recently, she has found herself in the role of discerning coach and popular teacher. She has good eye for proper technique and her diagnostic skills are precise, yet gently intuitive. People who take her classes describe her teaching style as easy and fun, but she has no problem telling you like it is, yet in an encouraging and supportive way. She is loyal teacher, and promises to get results!
Bill has been in the West Coast Swing world a little bit longer than Yuna, teaching this dance style since 1993. In 1997 he was the U.S. Open Swing Dance Champion, and a 2 time Canadian Blues Champion in 1998. Since then, he has become a U.S. Open judge and a World Swing Dance Council Charter Member. He currently travels throughout the U.S. and Canada to teach classes and workshops, emphasizing technique, contemporary styling and timeless musicality. Bill’s teaching style is easy-going and relaxed, yet he encourages connection, centering, timing and balance to all of his students. In addition to coaching and scoring dancers at the New Year’s event, Bill offers private lessons as well as weekly group lessons for beginner, intermediate and advanced dancers.

Dance Pros welcome Degendered Routines
In the past, to be able to perform or compete as a couple in Swing, you had to have one male and one female. In an effort to welcome all couples, Dance Pros is featuring a Degendered Routine for their second year in a row. Now, male-male couples and female-female couples can dance and compete with everyone else.
Pro- staff teaching classes
When Bill and Yuna take a break from guiding your footwork during this Dance Pros event, you will have the opportunity to learn from the infamous Swing couple, Jordan and Tatiana. The pair has been working together for 16 years and are 11-time U.S. Open Champions, and individually carry 20 U.S. Open titles. In 2001, when they were both only 18 years old, their dance routine to N’Sync’s “Dirty Pop” won them their first year in the Classic Division at the U.S. Open, making them the youngest couple to win the U.S. Open in an adult division. That record remains undefeated to this day.
Currently they travel 47 out of the 52 weeks per year, performing, teaching workshops, and judging. When they aren’t occupied doing those things, they find time to choreograph for some of the top dancers in Latin, Ballroom, Salsa, and Bachata. So, take advantage of the Jordan and Tatiana Intensive Course, knowing they won the Star Award for the Couple with the Most Impact on Swing at the UCWDC World’s.
