Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park

Those who enjoy being outdoors and going for hikes should spend a day out at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. This historic park is about a 15-minute drive from McEachern High School. The 2,965-acre park is open from dawn to dusk and is free to the public. If you are visiting on a weekend, Kennesaw Mountain Road is closed, but there is a shuttle bus that will take you to the top of the mountain for a small fee.

While this is a great spot for hikers and nature lovers, this is also an excellent place to visit if you’re interested in American history. In the park you’ll find monuments, historical markers, and cannon emplacements. Two of the monuments are the Illinois Monument and the Georgia Monument. Located on Cheatham Hill, the Illinois Monument is the largest in the park and honors the Illinois soldiers that fought in the Civil War. Nearby there is also a tunnel that was started by the Union soldiers who planned to blow up a Confederate position with a mine. The Georgia Monument honors the Georgian soldiers of the Civil War. It can be found at the foot of Kennesaw Mountain.

Another historical structure in the park is Kolb’s Farm. This farm belonged to Peter Valentine Kolb II. He was one of the earliest settlers of Cobb County. His house stood on 600 acres of land, and he owned 10 slaves to tend his farm. In 1864, Kolb and his family fled when Federal troops came to the house. The house was damaged during Civil War battles, but it has now been restored.

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park is also great for taking short walks or long hikes. It has 22 miles of hiking trails. If you start at the visitor center, there are four round-trip trails laid out at two miles, six miles, 11 miles, and 17 miles. All of these trails include some moderately steep hills. As with any hiking excursion, be prepared with good hiking shoes, water, and possibly food. If you do decide to bring food, keep in mind that picnicking is only allowed in designated areas.
