When entering the lobby of the building, the most noticeable feature is the magnificent stained glass dome on the ceiling. Sunlight illuminates the vivid colors, creating beautiful lighting for a unique photo. There are also colorful stained glass windows throughout the capitol. These gorgeous colors pour into the elegant building, allowing you to take impressive photos with magical colors throughout.
Old Governor’s Mansion
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Old Governor’s Mansion is a beautiful and charming building. Many refer to as Louisiana’s White House, and once you visit, you’ll understand why. It looks just like a miniature version of the president’s residence! Grab a picture of the Louisiana’s White House from the outside, or take a guided tour and get a behind-the-scenes look.
The Old Governor’s Mansion is elegant and refined, with beautiful marble staircases and checkered floors. Its high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and regal ballrooms create the perfect background for any photo.
Capitol Park Museum
You may be surprised to find that a museum is on the list of photo ops in Baton Rouge, but Capitol Park Museum is filled with a few interesting sights you’re definitely going to want a picture of.
One of the most outstanding photo ops in the museum is the Greetings from Louisiana mural, located on the second floor. The letters in the word “Louisiana” feature scenes of plantations, flowers, and wildlife. On top of the mural is a giant crayfish, one of Louisiana’s traditional dishes, reaching out towards the viewer. It’s a great place to get a unique photo celebrating this iconic city.
Louisiana Art & Science Museum
Another museum on the list of photo ops? That’s right! It just so happens that Baton Rouge has photogenic displays in a few of their museums, so not only will you learn a lot, but get some fantastic photos as well.
Louisiana Art & Science Museum has two-story-high, floor-to-ceiling windows, which provide fantastic lighting. The best photo op in the museum is The Planet Tower. This exhibit stretches up to the ceiling and contains giant models of the planets, built to scale. The Planet Tower is located inside the museum’s planetarium dome, which represents the size of the sun. It’s fascinating to see the varying sizes of the planets on display. You might be surprised that the rings on the model of Saturn are 15 feet wide, while the Earth is the size of a bowling ball.
Climb the staircase alongside The Planet Tower to get a bird’s eye view, as well as impressive photos.
The Walls Project
The Walls Project of Baton Rouge is a community initiative that strives to celebrate public art. This nonprofit organization has supported local artists in creating more than 100 murals, and the efforts continue on.
The Walls Project created a map to highlight all their work throughout the Baton Rouge, allowing visitors to take a self-guided art tour. Some of the closest murals to Raising Cane’s River Center Arena are Metamorphosis, a less than 10-minute walk; Umbrella of Flowers, a 10-minute walk; and Cinq Ombres, also a 10-minute walk. Murals not only make for outstanding photos, but celebrate the public art scene of Baton Rouge.
Milford Wampold Memorial Park
Don’t overlook local parks as a photo opportunity destination! Milford Wampold Memorial Park is a great place to get pictures, as well as to relax among nature. The park also provides a beautiful view of the pink and orange sunset over the lake.
Milford Wampold Memorial Park features wooden docks, beautiful vines, wide-open fields, and a lake. At 4.15 acres, there’s plenty of room to explore and take photos. You won’t regret visiting Milford Wampold Memorial Park during sunset, and it’s only 10 minutes away from Raising Cane’s River Center Arena.
Cohn Arboretum
Cohn Arboretum is another scenic destination to explore and get some great photos. This 16-acre arboretum is home to more than 300 species of plants, a fruit orchard, a butterfly garden, and a bamboo collection. You can also get photos of their four water features, ponds with lily pads, and a tropical plant collection. At Cohn Arboretum, pretty much any photo you take is going to be beautiful.
