City Guide

Frankfort, Kentucky Travel Guide

Where to stay, how to get around, what to eat, and everything else you need to plan your trip.

Section 01

City Overview

Frankfort is Kentucky's capital city with about 27,000 residents, making it one of the smallest state capitals in America. Don't let the size fool you though – this historic river town along the Kentucky River has excellent facilities for youth sports tournaments and a surprisingly robust infrastructure for hosting events. The city sits right in the heart of Kentucky, about an hour from both Louisville and Lexington.

The sports scene here revolves around Kentucky State University and strong high school athletics, plus the city actively courts youth tournaments at facilities like Lakeview Park and the Capital City Activity Center. Baseball, softball, soccer, and basketball tournaments are regular fixtures here. The compact downtown area means everything is close together, and there's genuine small-town hospitality that makes hosting teams feel personal rather than transactional.

Frankfort works well for groups wanting a quieter tournament experience without big city crowds and traffic, but still with decent amenities. The Kentucky State Capitol dominates the skyline, and bourbon distilleries dot the surrounding countryside – making this a solid choice for tournaments where parents want something interesting to do between games.

Section 02

Getting Around

The closest major airport is Louisville Muhammad Ali International (SDF), about 65 miles away and roughly an hour drive via I-64 East. Lexington's Blue Grass Airport (LEX) is similar distance at about 55 miles via US-60 West to I-64. Most teams driving in will use I-64 as the main artery, with US-127 and US-60 providing north-south access.

Rideshare coverage exists but is limited – don't count on quick Uber pickup times like you'd get in Louisville. Enterprise, Hertz, and Budget have locations in town if you need rental cars. There's no meaningful public transit system, so plan on driving everywhere. The good news is that nothing is far apart – you can drive across the entire city in 15 minutes, and parking is free and plentiful almost everywhere.

Most sports venues are within 5-10 minutes of downtown hotels. Traffic is rarely an issue except during state government rush hours (7:30-8:30 AM and 4:30-5:30 PM on weekdays). Weekend tournament traffic moves smoothly since the city empties out when the state workers go home.

Section 03

Where to Stay

The main hotel corridor runs along US-127 (Capital Avenue) near I-64, where you'll find most of the chain hotels including Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Country Inn & Suites. This area puts you within 10 minutes of most sports venues and offers easy highway access for teams coming from multiple directions.

Downtown Frankfort has fewer hotel options but includes the Historic Inns of Frankfort if your group wants something with more character. The East Frankfort area along Versailles Road has newer chain hotels and is particularly convenient for tournaments at Lakeview Park or events at Kentucky State University.

Avoid booking too far out on the rural highways unless you're getting a great rate – the convenience of staying close to the US-127/I-64 area is worth paying a bit more. Most hotels here are used to hosting sports teams and offer group rates, continental breakfast, and pools that teams actually use.

Section 04

Sports & Recreation

Lakeview Park is the crown jewel of Frankfort's sports facilities, featuring multiple baseball and softball diamonds, soccer fields, and basketball courts. The complex regularly hosts regional tournaments and has good parking, concession facilities, and restrooms. Juniper Hills Park offers additional baseball fields and is popular for youth league tournaments.

Kentucky State University has excellent facilities including Bradford-Wiley Gymnasium for basketball and volleyball, plus outdoor fields used for soccer and other sports. The Capital City Activity Center downtown hosts indoor tournaments, particularly during winter months, with basketball and volleyball courts plus meeting spaces for tournament headquarters.

The Frankfort Parks and Recreation Department actively recruits youth tournaments, especially in baseball, softball, and soccer. Spring and fall see the most tournament activity. Several local high schools, including Franklin County High School and Western Hills High School, occasionally host events and have quality facilities with good spectator amenities.

Section 05

Things to Do

The Kentucky State Capitol offers free tours and is genuinely impressive – the dome is worth seeing and tours run regularly during weekdays. The Kentucky History Museum and Old State Capitol are right downtown and good for killing time between games. Kentucky River walking trails provide easy outdoor recreation when kids need to burn energy.

Buffalo Trace Distillery is just 20 minutes away in Bardstown and offers tours (adults obviously), while Keeneland Race Track near Lexington makes a good day trip during racing season. Kentucky State University campus is pleasant for walking and has a small but interesting gallery.

For teams with younger kids, Cove Spring Park has a decent playground and picnic areas. Salato Wildlife Education Center offers easy nature trails and wildlife viewing that works well for team bonding activities. Louisville is close enough for day trips to bigger attractions like the Louisville Slugger Museum, but most teams find plenty to do locally.

Section 06

Food & Drink

Serafini downtown serves excellent Italian food in a restored historic building and can handle team dinners with advance notice. Rick's White Light Diner is the local breakfast institution – expect a wait on weekend mornings but it's worth it. Gibby's Restaurant does solid American comfort food and has booths that work for team meals.

For quick team meals, you've got the usual suspects: McDonald's, Subway, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell are all represented, plus Cracker Barrel near I-64 that teams love for pre-tournament dinners. Miyako Japanese Steakhouse offers hibachi tables that work great for team celebrations, and El Cazador Mexican Restaurant has large tables and accommodating staff.

Poor Richard's Books has a small café section that's perfect for parents wanting coffee and quiet. Buddy's Pizza delivers to most hotels and sports complexes. The local grocery options include Kroger and Walmart Supercenter for stocking up on snacks and drinks for tournaments.

Section 07

Shopping & Entertainment

Shopping options are limited but functional. Walmart Supercenter on Versailles Road handles most team needs including sports equipment, snacks, and forgotten essentials. Dollar General stores are scattered around town for quick runs. For actual shopping, most teams drive to Fayette Mall in Lexington about 45 minutes away.

Grand 10 Cinema on US-127 shows current movies and offers group rates for teams. Strike Zone Bowling is popular for team bonding and can handle large groups with advance booking. The Capital City Activity Center sometimes hosts events beyond sports tournaments, including concerts and community events.

Downtown has a few antique shops and local stores that parents browse while waiting between games, but don't expect extensive entertainment districts. Most team entertainment happens at the hotels – make sure your hotel has a decent pool and common areas where kids can hang out in the evenings.

Section 08

Weather & Packing

Kentucky's climate means hot, humid summers and mild winters with occasional cold snaps. Tournament season runs heaviest in spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) when temperatures are most comfortable. Summer tournaments can be brutal – expect temperatures in the 80s-90s with high humidity that makes it feel much hotter.

Spring weather is unpredictable – pack layers because you might see 40-degree mornings and 70-degree afternoons in the same day. Rain is common in spring and can shut down outdoor tournaments, so indoor backup plans are smart. Fall is generally the most pleasant tournament weather, with comfortable temperatures and lower humidity.

Winter tournaments are mostly indoor, but if you're here December through February, pack warm clothes because temperatures can drop into the 20s. Snow isn't common but ice storms occasionally cause travel problems. Always pack rain gear regardless of season – Kentucky weather changes quickly and outdoor venues have limited covered areas for spectators.

Section 09

Local Tips

Parking is free almost everywhere, including downtown and at sports venues – a major advantage over bigger cities. However, during state legislative sessions (January-April), downtown parking can get tight on weekdays. Most sports facilities have plenty of parking but arrive early for championship games when crowds are larger.

Gas prices here are typically lower than in Louisville or Lexington, so fill up before heading home. Many local businesses close early or aren't open on Sundays, so plan accordingly. The Frankfort Parks and Recreation staff are genuinely helpful if you need information about facilities or local recommendations – they want tournaments to succeed here.

Cell service can be spotty in some of the river valley areas around town, particularly at Lakeview Park. Download offline maps before tournaments. Local banks include First National Bank and Central Bank with decent ATM networks. Most restaurants and hotels accept cards, but bring cash for concession stands at some of the smaller venues.
