City Guide

Miami, Florida Travel Guide

Where to stay, how to get around, what to eat, and everything else you need to plan your trip.

City Overview

Miami is a sprawling metropolis of 2.7 million people that serves as the gateway to Latin America and the epicenter of South Florida's year-round sports scene. This is a city where beach culture meets big-city energy, creating an atmosphere that's equal parts laid-back coastal living and fast-paced international hub. The weather stays warm all year, making it perfect for outdoor tournaments and events.

Sports-wise, Miami punches above its weight with professional teams across all major leagues and a thriving youth sports infrastructure. The city has hosted everything from Super Bowls to World Cup matches, and the tournament scene is massive thanks to that never-ending sunshine. Between Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, you're looking at one of the country's most active youth sports regions.

The vibe is distinctly international – you'll hear Spanish as much as English, the food scene reflects Caribbean and South American influences, and the pace moves a bit slower than other major metros. For sports families, this means great cultural experiences, fantastic food, and plenty of beaches to hit between games.

Getting Around

Miami International Airport (MIA) handles most traffic and sits centrally located about 20 minutes from downtown and South Beach. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is another solid option, especially if you're staying in northern Miami-Dade or Broward County – it's often cheaper and less crowded. Both airports have plenty of rental car options, and you'll want one for a sports tournament.

The highway system revolves around I-95 running north-south and the Palmetto Expressway (826) forming a loop around the city. US-1 and the Florida Turnpike are your other main arteries. Traffic can be brutal during rush hours (7-9 AM and 4-7 PM), and summer tourist season makes everything worse. Plan 45 minutes to get anywhere during peak times.

Rideshare works well in the main corridors but can get expensive for longer hauls to tournament venues in the suburbs. The Metrorail and Metromover are decent for getting around downtown and to the airport, but they won't help much for youth sports complexes. Most teams end up with rental cars or charter buses for tournament weekends.

Where to Stay

For sports tournaments, Doral and the airport area offer the best combination of hotel options, reasonable rates, and central location. You're 20 minutes from most major sports complexes and have easy highway access in every direction. The selection of extended-stay and family-friendly chain hotels is excellent here.

Coral Gables and Pinecrest work well if your tournament is in south Miami-Dade – you'll be closer to venues like Tropical Park and have a more residential, family-friendly base. The hotels tend to be a bit pricier but the neighborhoods are safer and easier to navigate.

Avoid South Beach and downtown Miami for sports trips unless you have business there – the hotels cost twice as much, parking is a nightmare, and you'll spend all your time sitting in traffic to get to suburban tournament venues. Save the beach hotels for vacation trips, not tournament weekends.

Sports & Recreation

Miami's professional sports scene centers around Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens (Dolphins and Inter Miami CF), FTX Arena downtown (Heat), and loanDepot Park (Marlins). Hard Rock also hosts major college football games and international soccer matches, making it one of the country's most versatile venues.

The youth and amateur tournament infrastructure is massive. Tropical Park in southwest Miami-Dade is the crown jewel with dozens of baseball and softball fields hosting year-round tournaments. The Miami-Dade Sports Complex near Homestead handles everything from soccer to track and field. For basketball, the Kendall Indian Hammocks Park complex is a major tournament destination.

Soccer dominates the youth scene here, with complexes like Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill hosting massive tournaments. Baseball and softball are huge too, running tournaments basically every weekend from October through July. The travel ball circuit treats South Florida as essential territory – if you're serious about youth sports, you'll end up here eventually.

Things to Do

The beaches are obviously the main draw, and Key Biscayne offers the best combination of great sand, family-friendly atmosphere, and reasonable parking. South Beach gets all the attention but it's crowded, expensive, and not ideal for sports families. Hollywood Beach north of Miami has a great boardwalk and is usually less packed.

Bayside Marketplace downtown provides easy shopping and dining with water views, while the Wynwood Arts District offers cool street art and food halls that teams love exploring. The Miami Seaquarium on Key Biscayne is perfect for younger siblings, and Jungle Island offers interactive animal experiences.

For day trips, Everglades National Park is 45 minutes away and offers airboat tours that kids love. Key Largo is about an hour south and provides great snorkeling and glass-bottom boat tours. Both work well for teams with a day off between tournament brackets.

Food & Drink

Miami's food scene reflects its Latin American influences, with Cuban cuisine leading the charge. Hit up Versailles in Little Havana for authentic Cuban food that can feed a team, or try the more casual Pollo Tropical chain for quick Cuban-style chicken. For Venezuelan food, Doggi's Arepa Bar has multiple locations and serves massive portions perfect for hungry athletes.

Chain restaurants are everywhere, especially around tournament areas. You'll find the usual suspects – Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, Five Guys – plus Florida-specific chains like Tijuana Flats for Tex-Mex and PDQ for hand-breaded chicken. Many hotels offer team dining packages, which can save time and money for tournament groups.

For team dinners, Flanigan's Seafood Bar is a local institution with huge portions and a casual atmosphere. Lime Fresh Mexican Grill offers build-your-own bowls and tacos that work well for large groups with dietary restrictions. The food truck scene is strong around sports complexes – you'll often find good options right in the tournament venue parking lots.

Shopping & Entertainment

Dolphin Mall near the airport is your best bet for team shopping trips – it's an outlet mall with everything from Nike and Adidas to general retailers, plus a food court and movie theater. Town Center at Boca Raton is worth the drive north if you want higher-end shopping and dining in an upscale outdoor setting.

For entertainment, TopGolf Miami Gardens is hugely popular with sports teams – it combines golf with arcade-style competition and works for all skill levels. Dave & Buster's locations in Miami and Hollywood offer the classic arcade-restaurant combination that teams love for celebration dinners.

CityWalk in the Aventura area provides outdoor shopping, restaurants, and a movie theater in a pedestrian-friendly setting. For something uniquely Miami, Lincoln Road in South Beach offers outdoor shopping and people-watching, though parking can be challenging and expensive for large groups.

Weather & Packing

Miami has two seasons: hot and humid (May through October) and warm and pleasant (November through April). Summer temperatures run 85-95°F with afternoon thunderstorms almost daily – these usually last 30-60 minutes and cool things off temporarily. Winter sees temperatures in the 70s-80s with much less humidity and minimal rain.

Pack for sun and rain regardless of season. Sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water are non-negotiable – the Florida sun is intense even in winter. Bring rain gear for summer tournaments, including waterproof bags for equipment. Most outdoor sports complexes have limited shade, so pop-up tents and portable chairs are essential for spectators.

Hurricane season runs June through November, with peak activity in August and September. Monitor weather forecasts closely during these months – tournaments get cancelled or postponed with just a day or two notice. Indoor backup plans become crucial for summer travel.

Local Tips

Parking at sports complexes fills up fast, especially for popular tournaments. Arrive early or expect to walk from overflow lots. Many venues charge $10-20 for parking, so bring cash. Download the SpotHero app for downtown Miami if you're visiting attractions – it can save money and guarantee a space.

Traffic apps are essential here. Waze works better than Google Maps for local shortcuts, and 95 Express and other toll roads can save significant time during rush hour. Get a SunPass for rental cars if you'll be doing lots of highway driving – the cash toll lanes move much slower.

Many restaurants and attractions offer team discounts if you ask – bring roster sheets or tournament credentials. Hotel pools often close early (9-10 PM), which catches visiting teams off guard. Stock up on water and sports drinks at regular grocery stores rather than hotel vending machines – the markup is brutal in Miami.
