City Guide

Omaha, Nebraska Travel Guide

Where to stay, how to get around, what to eat, and everything else you need to plan your trip.

Section 01

City Overview

Omaha is Nebraska's largest city with about 470,000 people, making it a perfect mid-size destination for sports tournaments and group events. This is a working-class city that takes sports seriously – from hosting the College World Series every June to supporting a passionate youth baseball culture year-round. The city sits along the Missouri River and has invested heavily in downtown revitalization and sports facilities over the past two decades.

What makes Omaha special for sports teams is its tournament infrastructure. The city has experience hosting everything from NCAA championships to youth nationals, so hotels, restaurants, and venues know how to handle large groups. The Old Market downtown gives you that historic brick-warehouse vibe, while west Omaha is all modern suburbs and chain restaurants – both areas work well for different types of teams. Don't expect flashy – Omaha delivers on reliability, reasonable prices, and genuine Midwestern hospitality.

Section 02

Getting Around

Eppley Airfield (OMA) sits just 10 minutes northeast of downtown and serves most major airlines. It's a no-nonsense airport that handles group arrivals well. Uber and Lyft work reliably throughout the metro area, with typical airport-to-downtown rides running $15-25. Most teams rent vehicles since Omaha spreads out, and all major rental companies operate at the airport.

The city connects easily via I-80 (east-west) and I-680 (north-south loop). Dodge Street runs the full width of the city and will get you almost anywhere. Public transit exists but isn't practical for sports teams – stick with rental vans or ride-sharing. Traffic rarely gets bad by big-city standards, and you can drive from downtown to the farthest west Omaha sports complex in about 25 minutes. Parking is abundant and usually free outside of downtown events.

Section 03

Where to Stay

West Omaha along Dodge Street (around 120th to 180th Streets) offers the most sports-friendly hotels with easy access to most tournament venues. This area has newer properties, chain restaurants within walking distance, and straightforward highway access. The Elkhorn/West Dodge corridor works especially well for teams playing at the western sports complexes.

Downtown makes sense if you're playing at TD Ameritrade Park or want the Old Market experience, but you'll pay more and have less parking. The Aksarben Village area near 67th and Center offers a middle ground – newer development with restaurants and entertainment, plus reasonable access to both downtown and western venues. Avoid the airport hotels unless you're flying out early – they're isolated from everything useful.

Section 04

Sports & Recreation

TD Ameritrade Park downtown is the crown jewel, hosting the College World Series and various tournaments throughout the year. Werner Park in nearby Papillion serves as home to the Storm Chasers Triple-A team and hosts youth tournaments. The Tranquility Park Baseball Complex on the far west side is a massive youth facility with multiple diamonds and excellent tournament infrastructure.

For other sports, Baxter Arena at UNO handles hockey and can configure for basketball tournaments. The Omaha Sports Complex near 144th and West Dodge covers soccer, softball, and multi-sport events with good parking and concessions. Hitchcock Park offers tennis courts and recreational facilities. Omaha particularly excels at baseball and softball tournaments but increasingly hosts soccer, volleyball, and basketball events. The city's sports calendar runs heaviest from April through October.

Section 05

Things to Do

The Henry Doorly Zoo consistently ranks among America's best zoos and works perfectly for team outings – plan 3-4 hours minimum. The Old Market downtown offers cobblestone streets, unique shops, and team dinner options within a compact area that's easy to navigate with groups. Heartland of America Park has a decent fountain show and connects to riverfront walking trails.

Fun-Plex waterpark in nearby Fremont (30 minutes west) makes a great team reward trip. Topgolf Omaha near 180th and Dodge handles large groups well and stays open late. The Durham Museum in the restored Union Station appeals to history-minded teams and families. For quick entertainment between games, Laser Quest and multiple bowling alleys dot the west side. Skip the riverfront casinos unless your group is entirely adults – they don't offer much for sports families.

Section 06

Food & Drink

Omaha's signature dish is the pork tenderloin sandwich – try it at Stella's Bar & Grill or Brother Sebastian's Steakhouse. The city has a strong steakhouse culture with The Drover (famous for beef testicles, if your team is adventurous) and Spencer's for Steaks and Chops handling large groups well. Runza is the regional fast-food chain worth trying – it's basically a beef and cabbage pocket that locals swear by.

For team meals, Godfather's Pizza originated here and still runs strong. Village Grille in Elkhorn does solid American food for large groups. The Old Market has Spaghetti Works for affordable Italian team dinners. West Omaha delivers every chain restaurant imaginable along Dodge Street – Chipotle, Panera, Texas Roadhouse, you name it. Raising Cane's and Culver's work great for quick team meals between tournament games.

Section 07

Shopping & Entertainment

Westroads Mall anchors the main shopping scene at 100th and Dodge, with standard department stores and a food court that handles team groups adequately. Village Pointe shopping area near 168th and Dodge offers outdoor shopping with chain restaurants nearby – good for splitting up groups who want different activities. Nebraska Crossing Outlets in Gretna (20 minutes south) provides typical outlet mall shopping if teams want gear deals.

For entertainment, AMC theaters at Westroads and Village Pointe handle large group bookings. Main Street Arcade in Papillion works for younger teams. The Waiting Room Lounge and Slowdown downtown book live music but cater to adults. Aksarben Village has a decent mix of restaurants and small entertainment options in a walkable setting. Most teams end up at Dave & Buster's at Westroads for group entertainment that works across age ranges.

Section 08

Weather & Packing

Omaha's weather swings dramatically by season and can change quickly. Spring (March-May) tournament season brings unpredictable conditions – pack layers because you might see 40-degree mornings and 75-degree afternoons, plus frequent rain. Summer (June-August) gets hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms that can delay outdoor events. The College World Series happens during peak heat, so plan accordingly.

Fall tournaments (September-November) offer the most pleasant weather but pack for temperature drops. Winter sports (December-February) mean serious cold – we're talking below-zero temperatures and snow that can disrupt travel. Always check weather 48 hours before arrival since Nebraska storms develop fast. Most sports venues have indoor backup plans, but outdoor tournaments can face significant delays. Pack rain gear during spring/summer and serious winter clothing from December through March. The peak tournament months are April through October when weather cooperates most consistently.

Section 09

Local Tips

Download the ParkOmaha app for downtown parking – it's cheaper than meters and avoids tickets. Most sports venues offer free parking, but arrive early for big tournaments since spaces fill up fast. Hy-Vee and Baker's grocery stores are everywhere and perfect for stocking hotel fridges with team snacks and drinks.

Gas stations here sell ethanol-blended fuel as standard – it's fine for rental cars but affects mileage slightly. Restaurant portions run large and prices stay reasonable compared to coastal cities. Tip: many hotels offer team discounts if you book 8+ rooms, so always ask. The city gets busy during College World Series (mid-June) when hotel rates spike and availability drops. Local drivers are generally courteous but watch for aggressive lane changes near I-680 interchanges. Most venues have good cell service, but some rural tournament sites can be spotty for live-streaming games.
