City Guide

Spokane, Washington Travel Guide

Where to stay, how to get around, what to eat, and everything else you need to plan your trip.

Section 01

City Overview

Spokane is Washington's second-largest city and the unofficial capital of the Inland Northwest, sitting at the crossroads where Eastern Washington meets Idaho. With around 220,000 people in the city proper and 570,000 in the metro area, it's big enough to have serious sports facilities and dining options but small enough that you won't spend your tournament weekend stuck in traffic. The city has a blue-collar work ethic mixed with outdoor recreation culture, thanks to its proximity to mountains, lakes, and rivers.

Sports-wise, Spokane punches above its weight. The Spokane Chiefs WHL hockey team has a devoted following, and Gonzaga University basketball puts the city on the national map every March. The city regularly hosts youth hockey tournaments, soccer events, and basketball competitions. Don't expect flashy big-city amenities, but do expect friendly locals who know how to handle groups of traveling athletes and their families.

Section 02

Getting Around

Spokane International Airport (GEG) sits about 7 miles southwest of downtown and serves all major carriers. It's a manageable size that won't eat up hours of your travel day. Both Uber and Lyft operate here, though availability can be spotty during off-peak hours or late nights. Most teams end up renting vehicles since Spokane is definitely a car city.

The city sits right on Interstate 90, making it easily accessible from Seattle (4.5 hours west) or cities like Missoula (2.5 hours east). Highway 395 connects north to Canada and south to Tri-Cities. Public transit exists via Spokane Transit Authority, but it's not particularly useful for sports families hauling equipment between hotels and venues.

Most sports venues are within 15-20 minutes of downtown hotels. The Spokane Valley area, where many tournaments happen, is about 10-15 minutes east of downtown via I-90. Traffic is rarely a major issue compared to Seattle or Portland, but allow extra time during University of Idaho or Eastern Washington University game days.

Section 03

Where to Stay

Downtown Spokane offers the most hotel options and puts you within walking distance of restaurants and entertainment. The area around Riverfront Park has several major chains and is central to most venues. This works well if your tournament is at the Spokane Arena or Convention Center, plus downtown has the best dining scene for team meals.

For hockey tournaments or events at Northern Quest Resort, consider staying in Airway Heights on the west side. The Spokane Valley area on the east side works well for soccer tournaments at Plante's Ferry Sports Complex or events at CenterPlace Regional Event Center. Valley hotels often offer slightly better rates than downtown properties.

The North Division corridor has budget-friendly options but fewer dining choices within walking distance. Teams staying here should plan on driving to restaurants. Avoid the areas immediately around the Greyhound station and some parts of East Sprague unless you're getting a significant rate advantage.

Section 04

Sports & Recreation

Spokane Arena downtown hosts everything from junior hockey tournaments to wrestling championships and can seat over 12,000. The Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena is the Chiefs' home ice and regularly books youth hockey events. McCarthey Athletic Center at Gonzaga hosts basketball tournaments when not in use by the Bulldogs.

Soccer families know Plante's Ferry Sports Complex in Spokane Valley, which has multiple turf and grass fields and hosts major regional tournaments. Dwight Merkel Sports Complex offers additional soccer and softball fields. For swimming, the Aquatic Center at Camp Sekani and Comstock Pool handle most major swim meets.

Baseball and softball tournaments often use Avista Stadium, home of the Spokane Indians, plus various high school complexes. The city's parks department maintains dozens of fields across town. Northern Quest Resort & Casino occasionally hosts specialized tournaments and has meeting spaces for team events.

Section 05

Things to Do

Riverfront Park downtown is perfect for killing time between games. The park has playgrounds, walking paths, and the Spokane Falls overlook that's worth the photo op. The Skyride gondola gives you aerial views of the falls and city. Kids love the Red Wagon sculpture, which is actually a giant playground.

Silverwood Theme Park in nearby Athol, Idaho (45 minutes north) makes a great team bonding trip if you have a full day free. Manito Park has beautiful gardens and plenty of space for teams to relax. The Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture works for rainy day activities, and the adjacent Campbell House gives you local history.

Active teams can rent bikes and ride the Centennial Trail, which runs 37 miles from Spokane to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Bowl and Pitcher area in Riverside State Park offers easy hiking trails and river views. In winter, Mt. Spokane Ski Area is about 45 minutes away for downhill skiing or snowboarding.

Section 06

Food & Drink

Spokane's food scene centers on comfort food and regional specialties. Steam Plant Grill downtown serves steaks and Northwest cuisine in a converted power plant - great for team celebration dinners. Clinkerdagger overlooking the Spokane River handles large groups well and has been a local favorite for decades. Wild Sage Bistro offers upscale farm-to-table dining when you want something special.

For quick team meals, Frank's Diner serves classic American breakfast and lunch in a vintage railroad car. Dick's Hamburgers is a local institution with multiple locations - think In-N-Out but for Spokane. Mizuna does excellent vegetarian and vegan options. Pizza families should try Roman's Pizza or Boo Radley's for New York-style slices.

All the major chains are represented: Olive Garden, Applebee's, and Red Robin for predictable team dining. NorthTown Mall and Spokane Valley Mall food courts work for quick tournament meals. Local coffee culture is strong - Thomas Hammer Coffee started here and has locations throughout the city. Rocket Bakery downtown makes great pastries and sandwiches for grab-and-go breakfast.

Section 07

Shopping & Entertainment

River Park Square downtown is the main shopping destination, anchored by Macy's and featuring typical mall stores plus restaurants. NorthTown Mall on the north side and Spokane Valley Mall serve suburban shopping needs. None are destination shopping, but they cover basics if someone forgot equipment or needs tournament gear.

Entertainment-wise, downtown has most of the action. The Bing Crosby Theater and First Interstate Center for the Arts book touring shows and concerts. AMC River Park Square 20 handles movie needs right downtown. Lucky You Lounge offers bowling and arcade games for team activities, while Laser Quest provides laser tag fun.

For team dinners with entertainment, Northern Quest Casino has multiple restaurants and often features live music or comedy shows. Main Market Co-op downtown works for healthy snacks and local products. Uncle's Games is perfect for board game enthusiasts looking to kill time between tournament games.

Section 08

Weather & Packing

Spokane has four distinct seasons with hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. Summer tournaments (June-August) can see temperatures in the 80s and 90s with very little rain - pack sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water bottles. The air is dry, so hydration becomes critical during outdoor events. Spring and fall offer mild temperatures but can be unpredictable, so layer up.

Winter sports seasons mean dealing with real cold and snow. December through February regularly see temperatures in the 20s and 30s, with snow on the ground most of the winter. Indoor venues are well-heated, but you'll need warm coats for walking between buildings. Ice can be an issue in parking lots around sports complexes, so pack appropriate footwear.

The shoulder seasons (March-April, October-November) require the most preparation - you might see snow, rain, or sunshine in the same weekend. Pack layers and waterproof jackets. Most major tournaments happen during spring and fall when weather can change quickly. Indoor air tends to be dry year-round, so bring lip balm and lotion. Peak travel months are June-August for outdoor sports and December-February for hockey and indoor events.

Section 09

Local Tips

Parking downtown is mostly metered during business hours but free on weekends and evenings. Most sports venues offer free parking, but arrive early for big tournaments as lots fill up fast. SpokaneParking.com helps you find and pay for street parking via phone app. Gas prices tend to be lower than Seattle but higher than Idaho - fill up in Post Falls or Coeur d'Alene if you're driving that direction.

Washington state sales tax is 8.7% in Spokane, and there's no sales tax on groceries. Idaho sales tax is only 6%, so major purchases might be worth making across the state line. Tipping culture is standard - 18-20% at restaurants, $1-2 per bag for hotel bellhops. Most locals are genuinely friendly and willing to give directions or recommendations.

Download the Spokane Transit app if you're planning to use public transportation, though most sports families end up driving. GasBuddy helps find cheap fuel. Restaurant reservations are usually not necessary except for larger groups (8+ people) or weekend nights at popular spots. The city is generally safe, but like anywhere, keep valuables locked in vehicles and stick to well-lit areas at night.
