After Saturday, it’s pretty easy to pick out the Oakland A’s best moment of the season thus far: pitcher Sean Manaea recording a no-hitter against the seemingly indomitable Boston Red Sox. Not only was Manaea’s performance a highlight for the A’s, but the 2018 season as a whole. This was the first no-hitter of the season and the last one since June 3, 2017 by Miami Marlins pitcher Edinson Volquez.

Here’s the final out that clinched the no-hitter for:

Manaea allowed just three Boston baserunners, two off of walks and one from an error by shortstop Marcus Semien. To go along with that, Manaea tallied 10 strikes on 108 pitches. Initially, Manaea thought the error in the top of the 5th ended the no-hitter. It wasn’t until the 8th inning that he realized he still had it going, per Jane Lee from MLB.com. It was just the 12th no-hitter in A’s history. The last one coming in 2010 courtesy of  Dallas Braden’s perfect game versus the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Oakland A’s might have gotten the catalyst they were looking for. The start of the team’s season hasn’t been great. Currently they’re .500 with an 11-11 record and are sitting at fourth in the AL West. In a division with the World Series winning Houston Astros and the headline grabbing Los Angeles Angels, the A’s are going to need more magical moments if they hope to compete for a wild card spot.

It really is impressive what the Oakland A’s managed to do during this series against the Red Sox. Coming into the three game series, Boston had a 17-2 record and led the league in multiple offensive categories. The Sox had the most runs scored at 123, a .293 batting average, and a .361 on base percentage. They also had scored seven or more runs in their previous four games leading up to the no-hitter. But, they fell short in Oakland. Boston only took game one of the three game series against the underdog A’s.

The A’s hero pitcher, Manaea, now has a 1.23 earned run average, which is good enough for fourth best in the American League.
