The start of the baseball season always dominates sports headlines. But as far as the 2018 season goes, Shohei Ohtani has monopolized baseball talk. It’s no surprise why. Just two weeks into the season, the two way star is being lauded as the second coming of Babe Ruth. Let that sink in for a moment. Whether you believe that or not, Ohtani is turning some heads with his incredible repertoire of pitches and uncanny ability to swing the bat. Move over Mike Trout. The LA Angels have a new star.

Currently, Shohei Ohtani is averaging a fastball speed of 99mph. His splitter and slider are nothing to sleep on either. He is 2-0 on the mound with a 2.08 ERA, and has struck out 18 batters over 13 innings. Some might take these stats with a grain of salt considering both games came against the abysmal Oakland A’s. Either way, those numbers aren’t easy to overlook.

His batting statistics are almost as impressive, especially considering he’s a pitcher. Through seven games in the lineup, Ohtani is hitting .346 with 11 RBIs and three homeruns. So far, Ohtani has not hit in more than three consecutive games. He hopes to convince the LA Angels to bump that number up as the season progresses.

Shohei Ohtani’s next mound appearance is projected to be Sunday, April 15 against the Kansas City Royals.
