Mississippi Governor’s Mansion

First occupied in 1842, the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion is the second-oldest governor’s residence in the nation that remains in active use. Guided tours are conducted by friendly, knowledgeable docents that take visitors through the mansion’s historic section. The tours are offered for free on Tuesday through Friday and depart every half-hour. For security reasons, the Mansion grounds are not open for touring and public restrooms are not available. Mississippi State Capitol

Although the Mississippi State Capitol has been the seat of Mississippi’s government since 1903, it wasn’t the state’s first capitol building. The first capitol building was completed in 1822; the second, 1833. Although the current Mississippi State Capitol building isn’t “old,” relatively speaking, it still offers a wealth of history and architectural splendor. Some of the highlights of the tour include stop by the Senate and the House of Representatives Chambers as well as a portrait of Anselm Joseph McLaurin, the 34th Governor of Mississippi and the great-great-grandfather of actor Robin Williams. Old Capitol Museum

This restoration project returned the building to its original grandeur and ushered in the opening of the Old Capitol Museum.
