Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site

Also located in nearby Cartersville, the Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site is one of the most popular attractions in the entire Atlanta area. A major cultural center in the Mississippian Period, it was where thousands of Native Americans lived from about 1000 to 1550 AD.

This 54-acre site preserves six earthen mounds, the largest of which is over 63 feet tall and takes up three acres. This earthen knoll was likely home for the priest-chief of the tribe. In other mounds “nobility” were buried in decorated costumes together with the things they would need in after life.

An original Indian village site is also preserved. An archaeological museum presents life as it was in the Etowah Valley Historic District. See how natives decorated themselves with feathers, paint, shell beads, and copper ornaments. See the hand-carved stone effigies that still have some of the original paint pigments on them. Follow the nature trail along the Etowah River to view the V-shaped fish trap the Indians used. Stop at each descriptive passage to understand how early peoples used trees for medicine and food.

Experience the Etowah Indian Mounds year-round. Etowah’s Jr. Ranger Summer Activity Days include activities like a primitive tools and weapons show, blow dart making, and games that depend on the weather. The exhibits are handicap accessible. 813 Indian Mound Rd SE, Cartersville, GA 30120
