About Oakland Convention Center
The Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center was built in 1914 and was originally known as the Oakland Civic Auditorium. That was until the convention center was renamed in honor of Henry J. Kaiser after a 1984 renovation. The venue hosted everything from circuses, roller derby and wrestling competitions to a pair of 1950s concerts by Elvis Presley, an appearance by Martin Luther King Jr. in 1962 to commemorate the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation and dozens of Grateful Dead shows. The city closed the facility in 2006 and in the same year Oakland voters defeated a ballot proposition advocating a library space in the building. The facility was owned by the City of Oakland until 2011, when it was sold to the local redevelopment agency for $28 million. However, the redevelopment agency was dissolved by the State of California in 2012, so ownership reverted to the city of Oakland. In July 2015, Orton Development Inc. pitched to the City Council of Oakland to lead the way in reviving the historic landmark facility.
