Arrival & Pre-Event

Plan your arrival for at least one hour before your desired eruption viewing time to account for parking delays. The lots nearest the visitor center fill quickly, so be prepared to walk from peripheral overflow areas if necessary. Once parked, head immediately to the visitor center to check the current eruption predictions posted on the status boards. This allows you to plan your boardwalk walk effectively without missing the primary event. Wear comfortable, sturdy footwear as the walking surfaces can be uneven and weather conditions change rapidly.

During the Event

Position yourself along the designated viewing boardwalks at least twenty minutes before the anticipated eruption time to secure a clear line of sight. Maintain a respectful distance from the geyser and follow all park ranger instructions regarding boardwalk safety and exclusion zones. During the eruption, enjoy the spectacle but remain mindful of the large crowds gathered around the perimeter. After the water subsides, take time to explore the nearby Morning Glory Pool or other features in the Upper Geyser Basin. Keep your camera ready but prioritize the experience over capturing the perfect shot.

Post-Event & Departure

Expect heavy foot traffic on the boardwalks immediately following a major eruption as thousands of visitors return to their vehicles simultaneously. If you are not in a rush, lingering at the lodge or visiting the gift shop can help you bypass the worst of the exit congestion. Ensure you have your vehicle location marked, as the parking areas are expansive and can look identical under cloudy conditions. When driving out, exercise extreme caution for wildlife that frequently crosses the park roads during dawn and dusk. Plan for a slow, scenic drive back to your accommodation, as traffic queues are common throughout the park.

Winter

Winter is harsh and cold, with deep snow covering the basin and making standard vehicle travel impossible. Visitors must use snowcoaches or snowmobiles to reach the Old Faithful area during these months. Pack heavy-duty parkas, thermal layers, and insulated boots for your visit. It is an incredibly quiet and beautiful time to see the geysers.

Spring & early summer

Spring brings unpredictable weather, with frequent transitions between sunshine, rain, and occasional late-season snow. The landscape begins to green up, but boardwalks can remain icy or muddy during the early weeks. Dress in moisture-wicking layers and bring a waterproof jacket to stay comfortable. Be prepared for rapidly changing conditions during any single hike.

Mid-summer

Mid-summer is the warmest time of year, with pleasant daytime temperatures perfect for walking the boardwalks. Highs are typically mild, but direct sun exposure can be intense at this altitude, so wear sunscreen and a hat. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so keep a light rain shell handy. It is the busiest season for park attendance.

Fall season

Fall is arguably the best time to visit, as the crowds thin out and the air becomes crisp and cool. The landscape turns beautiful colors, and wildlife activity is often high as animals prepare for the winter. Pack warm clothing for the chilly mornings and evenings, even if the afternoons remain sunny. It is a fantastic season for photography.

Rain and snow can occur at any time of year in this high-altitude environment, regardless of the season. Always carry high-quality rain gear and extra layers to prevent hypothermia if a storm rolls in unexpectedly. Boardwalks become slippery when wet, so walk with caution and stay in the center of the path. Safety is always a priority.
