For a dance company to include the word “intrigue” in their title, the question comes to mind “well what about them is intriguing?” For starters, Intrigue Dance Intensive is one of the few companies with an astounding number of 5 star reviews on competitionhub.com from parents, dancers and studio owners. Additionally, their conventions include unique events like the Imagination Competition, giving students 100% control over their routine, down to the last detail. They also challenge creativity and execution during their Improv Contest by allowing only 45 seconds to improvise a routine to randomly chosen music.

If that hasn’t spiked your interest already, Intrigue Dance Intensive awards $7,000 in scholarships at every Regional event, sending students to top dance companies in the nation! On every tour, they visit 19 cities, award 76 Improv champs, teach 570 classes, and host 38 shows. This season learn from Intrigue’s industry professional staff and make yourself and your resume more intriguing.

Meet this intriguing faculty

Intrigue Dance Intensive pic 1The magical hand behind this operation is Creative Director Kevin Aubin, who has been perfecting his ballet skills since childhood. At the age of 15 he started his dance studies at the globally esteemed School of American Ballet. While there, his  talents drew instant recognition, leading to his debut performance in Organon with New York City Ballet. Following Organon, Kevin was cast in numerous Broadway productions including Wicked, Spiderman Turn Off the Dark, and Hot Feet. He’s also toured the world performing West Side Story, and is responsible for creating the role of Paulo in the award winning New York Music Festival production Common Grounds, which became an Off-Broadway spectacular.

If Hip Hop is more your speed, absorb all the advice you can from Anze Skrube, whose name is notorious in the dancing and chorographical arenas. He was born in Slovenia, and at 15 years old he was teaching workshops across Europe. In between teaching, Anze founded the dance crew “Maestro” which won multiple national and world championship titles. In his early 20s he came to Los Angeles, CA and shortly after, celebrities like Usher, Prince, Justin Timberlake, and Chris Brown cast him as a dancer in their performances. When Anze is not teaching at various dance studios across the country, he travels the globe providing choreography and creative direction for artists on tours, TV shows, and live performances.

Intrigue Dane Intensive’s convention classes and workshops

Every regional event begins with a convention, and the convention includes 2 days of professionally administered classes and workshops, taught by Intrigue’s staff. One-day registration for classes is permitted, although one day participants are NOT eligible for showcase or scholarships. If an Intrigue faculty member notices a dancer missing in class, that dancer is penalized and their scholarship may be withdrawn.

The workshops are divided by 4 class levels – – Mini (ages 5-8), Junior (9-12), Teen (13-15), and Senior (16 and up). Also, teachers may receive discounts for attending the conventions depending on how many registered students they bring.

Career launching awards and scholarships (Convention only)

The idea behind Intrigue Dance Intensive Conventions is not only to teach new skills and stimulate confidence during class time, but also to promote further education after the convention has concluded.  To fulfill this task, Intrigue provides over $7,000 in scholarships to students in every city on tour. These scholarships send dancers to some of the top dance schools in the nation! They include; Broadway Dance Center Scholarship in NYC, Millennium Dance Complex Scholarship in Pittsburgh, PA, a Year Scholarship to Intrigue, and a scholarship to Peridance Capezio Center in NYC.

In addition to scholarships, Intrigue recently introduced 2 new awards to their conventions; the Apprentice and True Performer Award.  To win either award, dancers must participate in all classes throughout the weekend, and compete in the Improv Competition. The Apprentice Award is for the Junior level only. It provides unlimited free classes for 2 years, or until dancer moves into the Teen level at age 13, whichever comes first. An Apprentice is the highest Junior award, and comes with the opportunity to become an Intrigue Assistant for the following season.

The True Performer Award is only permitted for Teen and Senior workshop levels. It also includes unlimited free classes for 2 years, or when a Teen moves into the Senior Level, whichever comes first. The True Performer award is the highest Teen and Senior award and comes with the opportunity to become an Intrigue Assistant for the following season!

All age categories – Petite, Junior, Teen, Senior – are able to strut their moves to randomly chosen music. They only have 45 seconds to dance with a 10 second countdown. Winners are chosen from each age category and receive a $50 gift card to Intrigue. Make sure to register for this feature quickly because space is limited.

Time for your imagination to run wild

Intrigue Dance Intensive wants to see your story unfold through dance, which is why they are proud to engage dancers to Intrigue Dance Intensive pic 2produce, set the stage, light, and direct their own routines as part of the Imagination Competition at Regionals! This unique competition is for dancers between the ages of 13-21. It is designed to see what the young professionals can come up with, while testing choreographic and design skills. There is a minimum of 4 dancers per routine and the winner receives an award and showcases their routine during the Finale Showcase.

Kicking off the competition at Intrigue Dance Intensive

As mentioned before, dancers must be registered for the full 2-day regional convention to be able to compete. Once the Intrigue Competition kicks off, family and friends can watch for FREE! Intrigue wants their students to feel supported and not restrict any fans from attending because of money issues.

Dancers may select from 13 performance categories, including an Open category that combines elements from 2 of the other categories. Routines are divided by the average age of the dancers and by skill level.

Hungry for some competition awards?

Aside from the typical placement awards for highest scoring performances, dancers have the opportunity to compete for the Choreography, Visionary, True Director and True Producer Awards.

Intrigue Dance Intensive competitors prepare for a treat because the Visionary Award received an extraordinary upgrade. Now the winner from each regional event performs on Sunday at the Showcase, with custom lighting designed by the Choreographer/ Teacher or Studio Owner! Judges look at group entries whose performances are truly visionary, i.e. who can deliver the most creative and breath taking performance.

The Choreography Award is completely new to Intrigue, and they included it because they understand the triumphs and challenges that go into creating choreography for each age division. During the award ceremony, Intrigue recognizes the best overall group entries and selects one winner from each age division.

The True Director and True Producer Awards are designed to reward technical diversity by recognizing studios that embrace all styles of dance. To be eligible for True Director, studios must compete in multiple genres, and have 10 group entries. The highest scoring entry from each qualified studio wins, and every dancer involved in the routine receives a 50% discount to Intrigue Nationals workshop classes. To be eligible for True Producer, the studio must compete in multiple genres and have at least 15 group entries. The highest scoring entry from each qualified studio wins and all the dancers in the entry receive FREE access to Intrigue Nationals workshop classes.

Intrigue Dance Intensive is more than fascinated by you, the dancer, which is why they want to put your imagination and creativity to the test. They designed certain competitions (like the Improv and Imagination Competitions) to draw out various influences and technical skills, so they can see the story behind every student unfold before their eyes. Professional dancers and choreographers will be there to encourage and assist students along their journeys and will award routines that reflect true originality. Join them this tour season and allow yourself to be intrigued, but most importantly show them why they should be intrigued by you. Oh, and if you think Regionals are impressive, wait and see what they have in store for Nationals!
