Holocaust & Intolerance Museum of New Mexico

A powerful and extensive attraction concerned with educating visitors on genocide, the key focus being the Holocaust, the Holocaust & Intolerance Museum of New Mexico displays incredibly informative exhibits that show snippets of the Holocaust and other genocides through photographs, artifacts, and artwork.

Study pictures taken by Allied soldiers at Buchenwald while they were liberating the camp from the Nazis. Other authentic photos include survivors of Dachau and other camps and the horrific medical experiments performed on prisoners. You can also examine the Nazi memorabilia collection at the museum, as well as appreciate the paintings and other artwork commemorating Holocaust survivors in the gallery.

One of the most powerful pieces in the museum is the mesh sculpture recreating a typical sleeping area for children at the concentration camps. Witnessing the poor, cramped conditions these children had to endure will make you realize how awful their situation really was. A replica camp gate with the slogan, “Arbeit macht frei,” meaning “Work sets you free” can be found there as well. Civic Plaza

Located directly next to the Albuquerque Convention Center, Civic Plaza can be the spot you go to relax after you compete or the area where you wait for when you’re needed at the center.

The plaza is a spacious, paved area stocked with tables, chairs, and umbrellas, so it’s perfect for getting some fresh air. Grassy fields adjacent to the paved portion can provide your team with more places to run around or lay down and stare up at the sky.

Besides being a place to get some much needed tranquility, Civic Plaza hosts scheduled events year round. Friday movie nights are common during the warmer months, and during winter, ice skating takes over the square. The venue is a popular spot for local musicians to perform throughout the year. Telephone Museum

There you can trace the history of the telephone all the way back to its origin with Alexander Graham Bell. The museum showcases over 100 phones throughout the decades. A cool relic to check out is a teletype machine from 1963 that received the news of John F. Kennedy’s assassination. The machine has been maintained and preserved as a reminder of that grim day.
